This file transfer type, which originated on Linux, has made its way into the file transfer realm as well and has become more and more popular. The primary advantage of SFTP is that it only requires a single connection to control and send data, as opposed to the two ports used for FTP and FTPS. This makes firewall and router configuration far simpler, and because the communications take place over an SSH connection all information is secured.
